The Roland RE-301 Chorus Echo is an analogue tape-delay unit built around a free‑running tape transport system. It offers three playback heads, whose combinations can be selected by an 11-position rotary switch to control the delay timings. This mechanism supports rich, warm repeats with natural tape character and modulation, consistent with other units from Roland’s “Space Echo” lineage.

In addition to tape echo, the RE‑301 features built-in analogue chorus effect. The chorus circuit can operate independently or together with the delay engine, producing lush, sweeping modulation. There is also a “Sound‑on‑Sound” mode that enables real-time looping and overdubbing — a primitive form of modern looping made possible by the tape system.

On the front panel, users will find controls for intensity, repeat rate, and chorus intesnity, along with separate echo, chorus, and sound-on-sound switches. Footswitch jacks are provided for remote control of these functions. For output, there are two jack sockets (A and B), which allow for stereo chorus output and flexible routing: for example, sending reverb to one output and echo + sound-on-sound to the other.
