Synthesizers

Coming part and parcel with some of the genre defining rock and disco music of the late 1970s and early 80s, the synthesizer was adopted by bands such as ABBA and Kraftwerk before hitting the pop mainstream a few years later with artists such as Prince, Whitney Houston, and Billy Ocean integrating it within their performances. While the popularity of the synthesizer has somewhat waned during the 21st century, it is still very popular with indie and alternative bands looking to distance themselves from the norm.

Contrary to beginner and arranger keyboards, synthesizers allow for the playing of a great number of samples and accompaniments that can be further distorted to create sounds that the other keyboard types wouldn’t be able to. Synthetisers are at some level fundamentally present in many keyboard types but do not always offer the full range of functions that would actually allow you to create something. This is due to synthesisers being more of a controller than an actual musical instrument, it is only until it is integrated within a keyboard that they can be used as one.

Making use of oscillators to produce sounds through either additive or subtractive synthesis, the Synthesiser can emulate and distort the sounds of other instruments as well as combining them at will to produce something truly unique.

Who are Synthesizers For?

Synthesizers and indie/alternative bands are a match made in heaven. The diverse sound customisation options as well as assortment of functions makes a synthesiser the perfect keyboard choice for creating unique sounds and utilising accompaniments to fine tune their music. This isn’t to say that a synthesizer can only be used at the professional level, many smaller DJs and musicians have found followings through using synthesizers to distance themselves from the mainstream. While the synthesizer is designed as a fairly self-intuitive musical instrument, our experts at Fair Deal Music do recommend that you have at least a basic knowledge of the keyboard before trying to integrate it within your playing.

Keyboard Accessories

Being one of the more delicate musical instruments, the synthesizer requires semi-regular maintenance and care to keep it in top shape as well as an environment in which it can be safely stored. You might also wish to look into some additional equipment to create a space in which you can comfortably play and compose. At Fair Deal Music we are able to offer an assortment of musical instrument accessories that can help you do this as a part of our wider catalogue. To view those, click here.
